Cancer of the Pancreas

What is Cancer of the Pancreas?
By Joe Semonelli

Cancer of the Pancreas Cancer of the pancreas begins when cells within the pancreas develop certain genetic mutations. These abnormal mutations cause rapid and uncontrolled cell growth and these abnormal or diseased cells continue to live long after normal healthy cells would have died naturally. The pancreas also secretes digestive juices that assist your body in digesting food in general and is needed to sustain a healthy body.

There are different types of cancer of the pancreas. Cancer that forms in the pancreas ducts are called adenocarcinomas, and these make up the majority of cases of that medical professionals see. This term is used to describe cancer that forms within the hormone producing cells of the pancreas.

Locally Advanced - The cancer of the pancreas has spread into the tissues or blood supply around the organ itself and the tumor can no longer be surgically removed.

Cancer of the pancreas is difficult to cure if not caught in the very early stages. Only a relatively small number of diagnosed cases are ever considered to be fully curable with surgery. Often treatment focuses more on controlling the growth of the tumor with chemotherapy and medications, preventing the spread of the cancer to other organs.
